Welcome to Massapoag Yacht Club

Massapoag Yacht Club was founded on the shores of Lake Massapoag in 1946. MYC is an all-volunteer organization that has become a landmark for yacht racing in Massachusetts, as well as the Northeastern region of the US. Whether you are brand new to sailing or have extensive experience, MYC offers organized competition for all ages. We have hosted national sailing competitions as well as local and regional regattas. We hold races from May to October for all sailboat classes including juniors. For details see our Events Calendar.

2020 Junior Racing is Underway as of 6/28/2020

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Our 2020 Junior Racing program began on Sunday 6/28/2020 with 6 boats and 12 sailors participating - some members and some guests. Thaks to Commodore Jeff Sprung for getting the Club Sunfish ready to support this program. Wolf Goethert gave a talk to the racers on what happens out on the race course. Each week there will be a 10-minute talk on some aspect of racing before the kids go out. Lots of folks helped the kids get the boats rigged and into the water. Chairpersons Heidi Goethert and Joe Honor went over a capsize drill. Greg Kampf and Harvery Davidson ran the races for the kids and Harvey provided coaching on the water. After racing the kids learned how to put the boats away properly. Oh - and there were two races and lots of fun out there! And it was fun to watch!

Latest COVID-19 update

Friday, June 12, 2020

Thanks so much to our members for your cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic - it has been difficult for everyone, Fortunately, community efforts at social distancing and other measures have significantly lowered both the number of new cases as well as the daily death count in Massachusetts. As we enter Phase 2 of reopening our economy, some of the standards are changing.

  1. Sports are coming back to Massachusetts; therefore MYC can continue to resume racing activities with some adjustments. Any adjustments to our current Sis will be prepared and shared with all members. We will be resuming race duty with masks required on boats if you perform duty with non-family members. IMPORTANT: Please let us know if you are uncomfortable with doing race duty so we may find a replacement beforehand,
  2. Outdoor dining with limited numbers of people and compliance with distancing requirements will be allowed.
  • No more than 10 people gathered at one time
  • We will start planning safe ways to gather for brunches and dinners at the club.
  • Please continue to social distance if you use the club’s tables and grills.
  1. Non-member guests will be allowed to come to the club and may sail their own boats or may sail with members. As with dining, no more than 10 people may gather at one time in each group.  Members may sail with other members.  Social distancing rules apply to all guests and members, i.e., masks to be worn at all times while sailing if your crew includes non-household members.
  2. Social distancing rules apply onshore and on the docks, i.e., masks required and social distancing of at least 6 feet or more, whenever possible.
  3. For anyone over 65, please use extra caution while at the club.

Of course, duty and any activities at the club are still at your own risk at this time and are optional.

MYC 2020 First Race of the COVID-19 Shortened Season

Monday, June 1, 2020

T

here were 13 boats racing pursuit races today at MYC - Sunfish, Lasers, RS Aeros, 420s and Flying Scots. Plenty of wind and Gary Werden did a great job running races.

Gary submitted an update - "Highlights of today.  8 sailors that are high school or college students.  5 female skippers.  In race 1 one female skipper was in the top 3.  In the other two races two female racers were in the top three.  In race 3 four of the top five boats had female skippers.

Chris Stow won the day."

MYC to Begin Racing - Rules Modified for COVID-19

Thursday, May 28, 2020

As you may know, the MYC Board has been working on adjustments to our racing program to comply with the Governor's Reopening Massachusetts plan. We are now ready to start racing this Sunday, May 31st at 1:30pm. Gary Werden has graciously volunteered to serve as PRO during this transition period and the Sailing Instructions will be modified based on the attached addendum.

IF YOU WERE SCHEDULED FOR DUTY, THERE IS NO DUTY FOR YOU AT THIS TIME.

Some highlights:

- All races will be pursuit races.

- Safety boat coverage will be limited. Racers who are uncomfortable with the conditions and/or the rescue assistance capacity SHOULD NOT RACE. Remember RRS Rule 4.

- The PRO, in consultation with the RC Chair or a Board Member, will determine whether conditions are suitable for racing based on the available rescue capacity.

- The RRS definition of Keep Clear is amended to: A boat keeps clear of a right-of-way boat when she maintains six feet between boats.

- All racers must wear PFDs on the water at all times and carry a whistle.

Please continue to wear a mask (or a neck gaiter, buff, or other suitable device to cover your mouth and nose) in areas on shore and on the docks.

We hope to see you on the water.
